Blonde vs. Brunette, #GossipGirl and Beyond

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

After this week’s episode of Gossip Girl, with the Blair-Serena-Cake Showdown and the “Looks like a duck and walks like a duck” interaction reminiscent of Beverly Hills 90210, we got to thinking about some of the best Blonde on Brunette catfights in entertainment history. Feel free to add your two cents.

Blair and Serena, Gossip Girl
Serena and Blair - Gossip Girl
The love-hate relationship between these two sometimes-frenemies, sometimes-besties has been ongoing since Season 1. Will they work out their differences now that they’re “more mature” and out of high school? Who cares – where’s Chuck?
Kelly and Brenda, Beverly Hills 90210
Kelly and Brenda, Beverly Hills 90210
Possibly our favorite of all the Brunette-Blonde match ups, we loved to watch Kelly and Brenda go at each others’ throats until Brenda hightailed it out of the famous zip code in the fourth season. Their returned catfight in the 2008 spinoff? Not so much.
Betty and Veronica
Betty and Veronica
The classic Blonde vs. Brunette match-up. These two Riverdale gals have been fighting over the love of one Archie Andrews since 1941. Archie’s May 2009 proposal to Veronica may have finally put this feud to rest, but we never count our little Betty Cooper out…
Jen and Angelina
Jen and Angelina
After Angie “stole” Brad Pitt away from then-wife, Jennifer Aniston, in 2005, we were squarely on “Team Aniston.” The seemingly never-ending battle still wages today in the tabloids, but with six kids for Brad & Angie, we’ve kind of forgotten about the once-golden couple Jen & Brad.
Ginger and Mary Ann, Gilligan’s Island
Ginger and Mary Ann, Gilligan's Island
Okay, so she’s a redhead, not a brunette, but that pop culture dichotomy was like a Rorschach test for adolescent boys in the 1960’s.
Meredith and Addison, Grey’s Anatomy
Meredith and Addison, Grey's Anatomy
While we’re on the gingers, let’s talk about Meredith Grey and Addison Montgomery-Shepherd. We wanted to hate Addison for coming back into the picture and muddling things up for McDreamy, but we ended up loving her self-deprecating humor and bad-ass attitude… though we still can’t bring ourselves to watch Private Practice.
Summer and Marissa, The O.C.
Summer and Marissa, The O.C.
We’re not going to lie, we never actually watched The O.C., but we do know that Summer ends up marrying Seth in the end, while Marissa died in a fiery car crash in Season 3. We’re going to say Summer came out on top in this feud.
Susan and Edie, Desperate Housewives
Susan and Edie, Desperate Housewives
The well-meaning, clumsy divorcee and single mom (Susan) vs. the backstabbing, bitchy single maneater on the block (Edie). Who’s going to win? Once again, blonde dies in a fiery car crash… kinda: She was drunk, hit an electricity pole, got out of her car stepped in a mud puddle, an electric wire was hanging down, and she got electrocuted.
Joey and Jen, Dawson’s Creek
Joey Potter and Jen Lindley, Dawson's Creek
Joey, the girl-next-door, and Jen, the mysterious out-of-towner, vied for the affections of the permed blonde Dawson Leery in a small town. While Joey ended up choosing a brunette herself (Dawson’s best friend, Pacey), Jen died of cancer (not a fiery car crash) in the final episode.
Gabriella and Sharpay, High School Musical
Gabriella Montez and Sharpay Evans, High School Musical
Okay, we’ll admit it. We saw High School Musical. Once. On a plane. We hated both the blonde and the brunette. But loved that Troy Bolton…

Got any additions?
