In Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), Tom Hanks plays a Texas congressman nicknamed “Good-Time Charlie,” who is known for his antics and womanizing ways. In this true story, Charlie Wilson learns about the people are suffering in the brutal Soviet occupation of Afghanistan from friend and romantic interest Joanne Herring (played by Julia Roberts), a Houston socialite and political activist.
Wilson then dedicates his political efforts to supply the Afghan Mujahideen with the weapons and support to defeat the Soviet Union with the help of the maverick CIA agent, Gust Avrakotos (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman). However, his assistance of the 
rebels will have effects that he did not forsee.
The film is adapted from George Crile's 2003 book, Charlie Wilson's War: The Extraordinary Story of the Largest Covert Operation in History. It was nominated for an Oscar as well as four Golden Globe awards. Charlie Wilson’s War stars Tom Hanks, who is a two time Oscar winner with over fifty other awards under his belt. Hanks also starred in other famous films such as The DaVinci Code, Cast Away, You’ve Got Mail, and Forrest Gump, which is also featured on the Washington D.C. TV and Movie Tour. The film also Stars Oscar Winner, Julia Roberts, who has starred in Pretty Woman, Steel Magnolias, Ocean’s Eleven, Runaway Bride, Erin Brockovich, and many others.
