On Location Tours visits all of the best neighborhoods in Brooklyn and one of our favorite neighborhoods is DUMBO, which stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. DUMBO is now primarily a residential area filled to the brim with artists, actors, musicians, and other young people seeking a cheap loft apartment while getting his or her start in the Big Apple. This eclectic spot has been the filming location for television shows such as CSI and HBO’s Sopranos and movies like Just Friends starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis.
DUMBO, once a manufacturing district in the 1890s, lead New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission to designate a section of this neighborhood as a historic district. Many of the older buildings and streets offer visitors a glimpse of the past. DUMBO is now known for being one of New York City’s best art districts and plays host to multiple art galleries that are non-profit and host free events for the local community and traveler.
A different form of art takes place just steps from these galleries, by the master artist of chocolate, Chef Jacque Torres. His chocolate factory opened in DUMBO in the year 2000 and his shop has seen major success, much like his cooking show on the Food Network, Chocolates with Jacques Torres. But before you indulge in dessert, swing by Grimaldi’s Pizzeria, a popular pizza shop for NYC locals and visitors alike. Many people agree the best way to enjoy this pizza is by taking a walk from Manhattan to Brooklyn using the Brooklyn Bridge Overpass. After pizza there should be just enough room for an ice-cream cone at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. This ice cream shop was converted from a 1922 fireboat house. In the past, firefighters in the marine fireboat station on the ferry landing used the little building for fireboat target practice. All the ice cream is freshly made so you’ll be able to taste the best old-fashioned ice cream Brooklyn has to offer. Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory also offers gorgeous waterfront views of Manhattan. Other great eats in the area can be found at the River Café, Atlantic Chip Shop, and Pete’s Downtown Restaurant. Pete’s was featured in the movie What Happens in Vegas as the restaurant below Jack Fuller’s (Ashton Kutcher) apartment.
While in DUMBO, the Brooklyn TV & Movie Sites Tour stops at the Fulton Ferry Pier. This landing pier connects Manhattan to Brooklyn with a ferry service on the East River. The pier also contains a picturesque park that has been featured in movies like Moonstruck starring Nicholas Cage and Cher. In the movie, Cher’s grandfather walks the dogs across the pier. The Forgotten starring Julianne Moore features the park as well as Coming to America starring Eddie Murphy. Other movies filmed on location at the park include Analyze That and 13 Going on 30 starring Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, and Judy Greer. The Brooklyn TV & Movie Sites Tour will highlight many more TV and movie filming locations so join us soon for a chance to see Brooklyn like never before!
