Take the New York Tour of TV and Movie Sites and check out locations where exteriors of Friends were filmed and where these six very different young friends journeyed to find happiness and success for ten consecutive seasons. Experience their daily lives by passing through Greenwich Village, SoHo, Midtown, and Uptown locations that were used in filming the famous series.
Midtown Manhattan
We'll start our Friends New York Tour at the beautiful Pulitzer Fountain, located across from Central Park, Grand Army Plaza, and The Plaza Hotel. The fountain was actually recreated almost exactly (minus the statue on top!) in California to film the opening credits where the six play in the fountain with umbrellas.
On the New York Tour, you will pass by 9 West 57th Street to the Solow Building, where Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) worked as a… what was Chandler’s job again? The Solow Building charges some of the most expensive rents in Manhattan and is featured in many films, including Zoolander, where the filmmakers added a giant computer-generated “M” to represent Mugatu's fashion headquarters. The building is also the namesake of the Nine West shoe store chain.
Next, pass Saks Fifth Avenue where our favorite stylista, Rachel Green interviewed for a job, but is passed over, despite Phoebe Buffay’s (Lisa Kudrow) exclamation that the job would be “like the Mother ship is calling you home!” Saks Fifth Avenue flagship store is just one of Manhattan’s many upscale department stores and has been referenced in shows like Seinfeld as well.
Lower Manhattan
On the New York Tour of TV and Movie Sites, you'll stop by the Friends' building, where Monica Geller (Courtney Cox Arquette), Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc), Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), and Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) had the time of their lives, located on the corner of Grove and Bedford Streets in historic Greenwich Village. The Village is referenced in many episodes, and is home to the real restaurant that inspired the fictional coffee shop, Central Perk, where the close-knit group of friends frequently shared a sofa, and where Phoebe famously performed “Smelly Cat.” You’ll also catch a glimpse of Ross’s nearby apartment, where the other friends often spied on him through their window, and where “Ugly Naked Guy” lived. As you’ll see, it’s not located directly across the street from Monica’s apartment – it would have taken a lot of chopsticks to poke Ugly Naked Guy in its real location!
Greenwich Village is often interchangeable with “West Village” and “The Village,” originally colonized by bohemians, artists, and writers squatting in abandoned factories. But now, it would be very difficult for a struggling artist to afford to live in the popular neighborhood. While Central Perk is a fictional coffee shop, you can still get your java fix at the quaint coffee shops in the Village, like Caffe Reggio and Cafe Figaro. Our New York Tours take you to fun, quirky neighborhoods that you won't visit on the standard New York City tours.
This fun, thriving neighborhood surrounds Washington Square Park, New York Universitiy’s campus, and has proudly developed a home for a significant number of Off-Broadway theater companies and venues. The Lucille Lortel Theater, where Joey performed all his plays, is also located around the corner from the Friends building.
Our family-fun NYC tour is led by local actors and actresses who show you the New York frequented by Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Joey, and Chandler. This is a must-do sightseeing tour of New York City for any Friends fan.
