Take the TV and Movie Sites Tour and follow the steps of parapsychologists Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis as they fight ghosts around the city as doctors Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz, and Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters. These ex-professors of the prestigious Columbia University decide they have enough proof of ghosts in NYC to collude as The Ghostbusters, a company dedicated to paranormal investigation and elimination. The ghosts begin to create mayhem, proving to the rest of Manhattan that the supernatural does exist in the city and the mayor hires the Ghostbusters to save the day! Bill Murray plays Dr. Peter Venkman. The talented actor has won an Emmy and Golden Globe. With a career that spans three decades, Murray is well known for his roles in movies such as Caddyshack, Tootsie, Nothing Lasts Forever, Little Shop of Horrors, Groundhog Day, Wild Things, Charlie’s Angels, Lost In Translation, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Get Smart.
Dan Aykroyd, who plays Dr. Raymond Stantz is an Oscar-nominated actor from Canada who started acting in High School. After appearing on Saturday Night Live for a few years in the 70’s, Aykroyd acted in films such as The Blues Brothers, and Coneheads.
Midtown
Go through Columbus Circle, just like The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man did as he begins to destroy the city, making his way to Dana Barrett’s (Sigourney Weaver) apartment at 55 Central Park West. Columbus Circle is a major landmark in Manhattan surrounded by The Time Warner Center and their shops, which have also been featured in the movies I am Legend,The Stepford Wives, Cloverfield and Enchanted. Inside Columbus Circle, is the beautiful monument of Christopher Columbus, which was built in 1892 commemorating the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ first voyage to the America’s.
See the New York Public Library, made to look haunted for the opening of the first movie, and the site of the symmetrical book stacking incident. The New York Public Library is one of the leading public libraries of the world and is one of Americas most significant research libraries. This NYC historic location has also been featured in the movie Spider-Man, The Day After Tomorrow, Maid in Manhattan, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and is the would-be wedding location of Carrie Bradshaw and Big in the Sex and the City movie.
Central Park
On Our Central Park Movie Sites Tour and our Classics Tour, you will get to see the famous Tavern on the Green. Just outside of the restaurant is where Rick Moranis is attacked by a beast, and becomes the Key Master.
You’ll also get a glimpse of 55 Central Park West where the Ghostbusters saved the world from Zuul, The Gatekeeper and The Key Master, otherwise known as the apartment where Dana Barret (Sigourney Weaver) and Louis Tully (Rick Moranis) lived. It was called “Spook Central” in the film.
Trendy TriBeCa
In order to start the Ghostbusters business, the ex-professors find the perfect headquarters in an old firehouse. The tour of New York TV and Movie Sites will take you right to the real working firehouse, Hook and Ladder 8, which was used in the filming of Ghostbusters as their headquarters. This authentic fire house is located directly in the trendy neighborhood of TriBeCa, short for “Triangle below Canal Street,” the richest zip code in the United States! TriBeCa, the home of the Ghostbusters, is also the home of the TriBeCa Film Festival, founded by Robert De Niro to celebrate NYC as a major filmmaking center and to contribute to the long term recovery of lower Manhattan. The firehouse is in fact very proud to be featured in Ghostbusters and has painted the Ghostbusters logo on the street in front.
Ghostbusters II
In Ghostbusters II (1989), a restraining order has forbidden Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore, and Egon Spengler from working as Ghostbusters, and as a result, they've had to find other jobs. Ray owns a book store called "Ray's Occult" and performs at children's birthday parties with Winston, Egon conducts experiments at the institute for advanced theoretical research, Dana Barrett broke up with Peter some time ago before marrying another guy, and Peter now hosts a local TV show called "The World of the Psychic." Dana, who is now the divorced mother of an 8-month-old baby named Oscar, works in the restoration department at the Manhattan Museum of Art. Strange things start happening when Oscar's baby carriage takes off by itself with Oscar in it, and it stops in the middle of First Avenue. While Dana's boss, Janosz Poha, is restoring a painting of a 16th-century tyrant named Vigo Von Homburg Deutschendorf, the painting comes to life... the ghosts are back and so are the Ghostbusters!
Lowered down on a wire, Ray discovers a river of pink slime filling an abandoned subway line, referred to as the New York Pneumatic Railroad (NYPRR), which represents the Beach Pneumatic Transit, the first attempt to build an underground public transit system in 1869. The film depicts the fictional Van Horne Station beneath the intersection of East 77th Street and First Avenue, where a subterranean river of supernatural slime flows through its tunnels toward the fictional Manhattan Museum of Art. It is interesting to note that the building used for filming the Manhattan Museum of Art's exterior was actually the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House near Battery Park, which is within a mile of the original Beach Pneumatic Transit's tunnel location.
New Year's Eve sees a sudden outburst of increased supernatural activity as the slime rises through the ground and onto the surface of the city, including a demon invading Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, a fur coat returning to life to attack its owner, a film monster burst out of a screen to attack audiences at a local movie theatre, and the "better late than never" arrival of the Titanic and its long-deceased passengers and crew into the harbor.
While the New York TV & Movie Sites Tour doesn't visit Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty, you may want to visit Lady Liberty and see if you can picture her making her way through the streets of New York to the sounds of Jackie Wilson's "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher"!
