The Godfather is a 1972 drama film starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton, and features Richard S. Castellano, Abe Vigoda and Sterling Hayden. The story spans ten years from 1945 to 1955 and chronicles the Italian-American Corleone crime family.
The Godfather received Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay, and has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. In addition, it is ranked as the second greatest film in American cinematic history list by the American Film Institute, ranked as #1 on Metacritic's top 100 list, and in the top 10 on Rotten Tomatoes' all-time best list.

Sightseeing The Godfather in NYC
See the flagship store of Best & Company on Fifth Avenue where Pacino and Keaton went Christmas shopping and do some shopping of your own. Pass by the Bellevue Hospital used for Michael’s confrontation with police Captain McCluskey and eat at Jack Dempsey’s Restaurant. The scene in which Don Barzini was assassinated was filmed on the steps of the New York State Supreme Court building in New York City!
Two different churches were used to film the famous baptism scene. The interior shots were actually filmed at Old St. Patrick's Cathedral on Mulberry Street, which we will pass on our tour.
Other locations featured in this hit movie that are not seen on this tour include the Federal Reserve Bank in the financial district, New York County Courthouse on 60 Centre Street and the famous Italian neighborhood in lower Manhattan known as “Little Italy.” Many scenes were filmed in this neighborhood including scenes on Mott Street where Don Corleone was shot and the Mietz Building at 128 Mott Street, which served as the Genco Olive Oil company.
The Godfather II (1974)
After the release of The Godfather, viewers were thrilled to see the sequel, which proved to be a success!
The Godfather Part II is a 1974 crime drama directed by Francis Ford Coppola from a script co-written with Mario Puzo. The film is both a sequel and a prequel to The Godfather, chronicling the story of the Corleone family following the events of the first film while also depicting the rise to power of the young Vito Corleone.
The Godfather Part II was a success and was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won six, including the Best Picture Award and the Best Supporting Actor Award for Robert De Niro. It has also been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. It was the first sequel ever to win Best Picture at the Oscars!
Godfather II in Lower Manhattan
The scenes that took place in Cuba were actually shot in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, but many other scenes were filmed in lower Manhattan. De Niro’s “Little Italy, 1917” scenes were shot on Sixth Street in the East Village between Avenues A and B.
- Chill at the bar where the Rosato brothers try to garotte Pentangeli, on 108 Avenue B at 7th Street at the southeast corner of Tompkins Square Park in the East Village
- Visit East 7th Street where the ensuing shoot-out was filmed and take a sip of coffee at Caffe Reggio in Greenwich Village!
The Godfather III (1990)
The Godfather Part III (1990) is the third film in the Godfather trilogy written by Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola, and directed by Coppola. It completes the story of Michael Corleone, a Mafia godfather who tries to legitimize his criminal empire. Although the third movie was considered the weakest of the three Godfather films, it did receive generally positive reviews and awards.
Little Italy and More!
Check out the Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral at 264 Mulberry Street in Little Italy where Michael Corleone is awarded the Order of St. Sebastian the Martyr, and Elizabeth Street where the Italian-American Street Festival took place, during which Joey Zasa (Joe Mantegna) is gunned down!
Have a drink where Vincent (Andy Garcia) and Mary Corleone (Sofia Coppola) drank at Mare Chiaro, now the Mulberry Street Bar at 176 Mulberry Street between Broome and Grand Streets. Take a glimpse of the Customs House at 1 Bowling Green at Broadway where the Immobiliare takeover meeting took place!
NYC Sites Not Featured On Tour
One of the movie's most shocking moments involved the real severed head of a horse in Godfather and animal groups protested the inclusion of the scene. Coppola later stated that the horse's head was delivered to him from a dog food company; a horse had not been killed specifically for the movie. This scene was shot in Port Washington, New York.
The Sicilian towns of Savoca and Forza d'Agrò outside of Taormina were also used for exterior locations. Interiors for the film were shot at Filmways Studio in Uptown Manhattan.
Other locations include the summer estate of Henry J. Kaiser, and a more surprising Italian location is New York’s Ellis Island, point of arrival for European immigrants during the first half of the century, where Vito Andolini becomes Vito Corleone.
