Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman) is a workaholic advertising executive. He has put his work before his family, and his wife, Joanna (Meryl Streep), has had enough and decides to leave him.
Ted is now left to raise their son Billy (Justin Henry) by himself, something he knows nothing about. There is resentment between father and son now that Ted can no longer focus all his time to his work, and Billy misses the love and attention he received from his mother. After many months of hardship, Ted and Billy begin to cope better and eventually grow to really love one another and get along.
About a year and a half after walking out, Joanna returns to New York in order to claim Billy, beginning a bitter custody battle. During the hearing, both Ted and Joanna endure unfair character assassinations from the opposing side’s lawyer. Despite Ted’s efforts, Joanna is eventually awarded custody. However, on the morning that Joanna is supposed to take Billy, she instead tells Ted that, while she loves Billy and wants him with her, she knows that his true home is with Ted. She has decided not to take him.
Two-time Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman plays Ted. He can be seen in movies like The Graduate, Marathon Man, Tootsie, Rain Man, Dick Tracy, Hook, Sleepers, Wag the Dog, Meet the Fockers, The Lost City, and Stranger Than Fiction.
