Law & Order is an American police procedural and legal drama television series, filmed in our favorite city, New York. The series mainly follows the lives of several police officers and prosecutors who represent the public interest in the criminal justice system. The shows success and popularity resulted in a Law & Order franchise with the creation of three other television dramas under the same brand, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Law & Order: Trial by Jury, the first two of which are still on the air today.
Law & Order: SVU is the highest rated series of the Law & Order franchises. The show focuses on the Special Victims Unit, a new elite squad of NYPD detectives who investigate sexually related crimes in the fictitious 16th Precinct of the NYPD Department. The shows stars include Christopher Meloni, Mariska Hargitay, Richard Belzer, Dann Florek, and Ice-T.
Law & Order: Criminal Intent is the second spin off of Law & Order, which has starred Vincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, Chris North, Julianne Nicolson, Jeff Goldblum and Eric Bogosian. This series focuses on high profile cases (like murders), involving VIPS, local government officials and employees, the financial industry, and the art world.
Law & Order: Trial by Jury is the third spin off of Law & Order which focused on the criminal trial of the accused, showing both the prosecution and defense’s preparation for trial, as well as the trial itself. The show starred Bebe Neuwirth, Amy Carlson, Kirk Acevedo and Scott Cohen and ran from 2005-2006. This was the second Law & Order spin-off to be canceled due to low ratings (Crime and Punishment, a reality series, ran from 2002-2004). Jerry Orbach's death (which occurred during taping of the show) also contributed to the show's cancellation.
All of the American Law & Order series—with the exception of the reality series, Crime and Punishment—have been filmed almost entirely in the New York City area, which is unusual, as most television dramas (with the exception of some daytime soap operas) and many other network shows are recorded in the Los Angeles area, even if the program is set in New York City. You will see many of these great New York locations on the New York TV and Movie Tour.
Downtown
On the New York Tour of TV and Movie Sites, see the New York Supreme Court at Foley Square, also known as the NY Courthouse, at 60th Centre Street, where you have likely seen Jack McCoy and other attorneys run up and down its stairs. The Supreme Court is New York’s trial court, located in the beautifully green Foley Square in lower Manhattan. The square is often featured in Law & Order as well because of its long association with the NY County, NY State, and judicial building.
Chelsea Piers
Our next hot spot will be the famous Chelsea Piers, located on pier 62 Manhattan. Within Chelsea Piers is Manhattan’s largest center for film and television production with over 200,000 square feet. The Silver Screen Studios is featured in Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
Chelsea
Located in the western portion of Manhattan is Chelsea, a historic and diverse neighborhood that is also home to the General Theological Seminary on West 20th Street. This is frequently used as a set for Law & Order!
1 Police Plaza
Get the chance to see one of the most highlighted sites in the hit series Law & Order at One Police Plaza, also know as “Puzzle Palace.” It is the largest NYPD headquarter in New York City and featured many of the squads in Law & Order including Major Case Squad, Special Victims Unit, Emergency Services Unit, Crime Scene Unit, and many others. Possibly one of the most famous and important location in this series where crimes are solved and bad guys go down. Don’t miss the chance to see the station for yourself on a New York Tour!
Union Square
Also known as Union Square Park, it is bounded by 14th Street to the south, Union Square West on the west side, 17th Street on the north, and Union Square East on the east. Just east of Union Square Park, on East 18th street is one of the oldest and frequently featured bar and restaurant, Pete’s Tavern. This site often appears on Law & Order and other television shows
East Village
See Katz’s Deli, located at 205 E. Houston in East Village! Known for its appearance in numerous films and movies such as When Harry Met Sally, Enchanted, We Own the Night, and Across the Universe, it was also used in some Law & Order scenes. You'll see Katz's Deli on the New York Tour of TV and Movie Sites - stop back after the tour to "have what she's having!"
