Filming Locations from Sex and the City | SATC Hotspots New York Tour | NYC Bus Tours, Sightseeing in Manhattan, NYSex and the City: The Movie

SATC2 is coming!  Check out our Sex & the City Movie Package to celebrate the release of the sequel!

2008 became the "Year of Sex" when our favorite series came to the big screen.  In Sex and the City: The Movie, written and directed by Michael Patrick King, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), the ultimate New York single girl finally gets married, but not without some drama, of course.  Carrie and her long-time lover, Mr. Big (Chris Noth) ,buy a fabulous Manhattan Penthouse, and finally move in together, a decision followed by a very simple engagement.  However, simple wedding plans snowball into an extravagant event at the beautiful New York Public Library, complete with 200 guests and an over-the-top Vivienne Westwood gown.  While taking On Location Tours’ Sex and the City Hotspots Tour you will get the chance to see locations in neighborhoods all around New York City where memorable scenes took place, plus many recognizable scenes from the HBO series.  It's the New York Sightseeing Tour for the wannabe Carries, Charlottes, Mirandas, and Samanthas.

Upper East Side

Home to many of New York’s elite, the Upper East Side is full of famous museums, elite schools, and luxury boutiques.  Here, you will get the chance to see the Carlyle Hotel, home of Bemmelman’s Bar, where Carrie has drinks with her assistant.  Jennifer Hudson, new to the Sex and the City cast, plays Carrie’s new personal assistant, Louise, who strikes up a real friendship with Carrie, and reminds her to have faith in love.

You may recognize the upscale restaurant, Lumi, from Sex and the City: The Movie.  Charlotte York, played by Kristin Davis, is pregnant after already adopting a child under the belief that she could not have children.  After Carrie is jilted by Mr. Big, a very pregnant Charlotte spots Big eating at the restaurant and runs out to avoid him.  However, she doesn’t quite make her getaway, because her water breaks and she has to be rushed to the hospital but by the last person she wants to see, Mr. Big.  He takes her to Lenox Hill Hospital, which you will also pass while touring the Upper East Side.  Lenox Hill Hospital was established in 1857 and performed the first angiocardiogram in the U.S.  Also, get a look at the building where Charlotte and her husband Harry Goldenblatt (Evan Handler) live in the movie.

Don’t miss the chance to see the exterior of Carrie and Big’s Penthouse from Sex and the City: The Movie!  Our New York Tours will take you to the location of what Carrie and the girls call “real estate heaven.”

Midtown ManhattanFilming Locations from Sex and the City | SATC Hotspots New York Tour | NYC Bus Tours, Sightseeing in Manhattan, NY

Midtown Manhattan is filled with beautiful historical architecture, the tallest skyscrapers, and is known as the largest central business district in the United States.  Hotel Giraffe is a beautiful boutique hotel located in the heart of the city.  You will pass this site on our Sex and the City Hotspots Tour and see where Big’s sublet was located in the movie.

Also on the NYC tour, you will get the chance to see the famous New York Public Library, where Carrie and Big’s wedding was supposed to take place.  This beautiful library, which opened in 1911, is internationally recognized as one of the greatest institutions of its kind, and a unique and stunning location for a wedding.

Covering 843 acres (6% of Manhattan) it is easy to understand why Central Park, located in Midtown Manhattan, is such an important part of life in New York City.  Central Park was the first landscaped public park in the United States.  Our New York City Tours, particularly our  Central Park Walking Tour, give you a glimpse of the famous park, where many shows and movies, including Sex and The City, have filmed.  Located in Central Park is The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, built in 1862 to provide fresh water to Manhattan residents.  In Sex and the City, Charlotte runs on a path near the reservoir with her dog in the snow.

Another famous park you'll see on the New York Tour is Bryant Park where Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte attend New York Fashion Week.  Bryant Park was named to honor poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant.  It is a convenient and beautiful place for New Yorkers to relax. Le Carrousel in Bryant Park was specially created to complement the park’s French classical style and is a wonderful place to bring children.  In the winter, free admission ice skating transforms The Pond at Bryant Park into the city’s premier winter destination. During the summer months, Broadway at Bryant Park showcases the most popular shows on and off Broadway as cast members perform their biggest hits over the lunch hour.

You will pass the Tiffany & Co. flagship store in Midtown Manhattan which is a location that cannot be missed when visiting the Big Apple! Tiffany’s is well known for its tiny window displays, and the store is on the U.S National Register of Historic Places.  In the very beginning of the movie, Carrie walks past this iconic and sees four younger women, triggering a moment of nostalgia as she remembers how far the friends have come. No New York Tour would be complete without a glimpse of this iconic building.

Lower East Side

Devastated after her breakup with Steve, who admitted to cheating on her, Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) moves into an apartment on the Lower East Side.  Originally home to NYC’s immigrant population, the Lower East Side, or “LES” is now the playground for the rich and hip.  With dozens of upscale boutiques, day spas, and trendy restaurants, this is a New York neighborhood not to be missed.  This neighborhood is known for its diversity.

After returning from vacation (which was originally meant to be her honeymoon), Carrie decides she needs to organize her life.  This calls for a personal assistant.  Enter Louise (Jennifer Hudson), who Carrie interviews at a Starbucks Coffee shop in the East Village.  This Starbucks in Astor Place, which you will pass during our guided New York tour, is one of the most frequented Starbucks in Manhattan.

Meat Packing District

The Meatpacking District, once known as Gansevoort Market, is a neighborhood in lower Manhattan that runs roughly from West 16th Street South to Gansevoort Street, and from the Hudson River east to Hudson Street.  For decades the Meatpacking District was a center for New York City's slaughter and meatpacking industry. However, beginning in the early 1990s, the Meatpacking District went through a formidable transformation; today, high-end clothing stores and restaurants together with trendy bars cater to young professionals and "hipsters." This, coupled with still-active meatpacking companies in the area, contribute to the area's "gritty glam" appeal.  This area is full of exciting locations from Sex and the City: The Movie, and we're one of the few New York Tours that takes you there!

The famous modern Asian cuisine restaurant Buddakan is one of the many trendy spots you’ll get to see on our Sex and the City Hotspots Tour.  You’ll recognize this as the setting for Carrie and Big’s engagement party.  It became a very eventful night when Steve (David Eigenberg) shows up, upsetting Miranda, who then makes a comment to Big that starts a spiral of events.  Nearby, you’ll also see 202, Nicole Farhi’s lifestyle store where you can eat a delicious brunch while you admire Nicole Farhi’s interiors and clothing collection.  This is where Miranda sipped coffee deciding whether to reconcile with Steve, and ended up with a cappuccino mustache.

Also in the Meatpacking District is the Diane von Furstenberg store, which is now also a major location for the MTV reality series, The City.  On tour, you will see this store built on a curve to resemble the iconic wrap dress that made Diane von Furstenberg famous.  This location is her flagship store, as well as her studio.  While shopping here in the film, Carrie gives Samantha (Kim Cattrall) a call to tell her the news of her engagement.

Tribeca

In Tribeca, (“the triangle below Canal Street,”) a neighborhood in lower Manhattan with a personality all its own that is also home to many of New York’s rich and famous, is where you will find the Duane Reade store where Miranda and Carrie Shop for a Halloween costume.  Although Duane Reade is a typical pharmacy, a major scene takes place here when Carrie spots an issue of Vogue where she posed in designer wedding gowns in preparation for her own wedding, which sadly never came to pass.  This was also the very first Duane Reade drugstore, opened in 1960.

Locations Not Included on the Tour

For various reasons, including time, parking, and logistical constraints, there are some locations from the TV show and movie that we are not able to visit on the New York tour.  These include: the leading auction house where the girls attend a jewelry auction; The fictional coffee shop where they girls meet to have brunch and talk, the Conde Nast Building where Carrie meets with Enid at Vogue; The restaurant where Carrie reveals that she is engaged; The restaurant where Carrie and Miranda have Valentine’s Day Dinner; The Brooklyn Bridge where Miranda and Steve reconcile.

Sex and the City: The Series

While many of the interior scenes for the series were shot at Silver Cup Studios in Long Island City, much of the series was shot “on location” making New York City itself the fifth star of HBO’s Sex and the City.  Our tour visits more than 40 locations from the show and movie, so we're not just New York sightseeing tours, we're New York "site-seeing" tours!

On the Sex and the City Hotspots Tour, follow in the footsteps of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda – you’ll drink where they drank, shop where they shopped, and gossip where they gossiped. The tour includes more than 40 locations from the show! As you drive by these exciting landmarks, you’ll also view clips from SATC scenes that took place right where you are. Whether you’re a Sex and the City fan eager to learn more about your favorite show, or a tourist looking for an entertaining way to see Manhattan’s best neighborhoods, this is a must-do sightseeing tour!

Magnificent Midtown Manhattan

Leaving from a classic Midtown site, the tour begins with glamorous Manhattan destinations. Perhaps the most famous, The Plaza Hotel, is, where Carrie Bradshaw said goodbye to Mr. Big ("your girl is lovely, Hubbell") and also where Mr. Big hosted his engagement party... to another girl!

 In Midtown, you’ll also see:

  • The New York Public Library where the wedding of Carrie and Big was supposed to take place
  • The chi-chi department store where the ladies discussed Alexander Petrovsky (played by Mikhail Baryshnikov)
  • The quaint church where Samantha wooed the Friar
  • ABC Carpet & Home where Charlotte and Bunny McDougal fight over a bed

Greenwich Village and SoHo

For a change of scene, check out Greenwich Village and SoHo. These unique, trendy neighborhoods are home to many of the ladies’ favorite up-and-coming, little-known haunts – and we’ll give you the lowdown on the best of them! We’ll sample cupcakes like the ones Carrie and Miranda stuffed into their mouths. Take stroll through this beautiful area of New York and shop in one-of-a-kind boutiques along Bleecker Street. It's a Greenwich Village walking tour inside a New York City Tour!

You’ll see:

  • Charlotte’s gym
  • The expensive men’s clothing store where Miranda took Steve shopping for a new suit
  • The Pleasure Chest, the sex shop where Charlotte bought her “Rabbit”
  • Aidan’s Furniture Company
  • The Bakery where Carrie and Miranda ate cupcakes
  • Boutiques along Bleecker Street – these could include Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Toosh, James Perse, Brunello Cucinelli, Fresh, Lulu Guinness, Creed, Mulberry, Olive and Bette, and more!

After your walk around historic Greenwich Village, we’ll head over to Scout, the bar Aidan and Steve opened on the show for Cosmos (if you so desire) and a bit of relaxation.

Meatpacking District

On our tour, you will also pass by the Meatpacking District, where you will see sites from both the series and the movie. You will see the famous modern Asian cuisine restaurant Buddakan, where Carrie and Big’s rehearsal dinner took place in the movie. Stand in the lounge at Buddakan where Big gave Carrie her last “single girl kiss.” Don’t miss the chance to shop where Sarah Jessica Parker modeled for the iconic designer's clothes during a shoot for Sex and the City: The Movie at Diane Von Furstenberg, which will soon, stirred up a whirlwind at DVF for Sex and the City fans and all the Carrie-wannabes out there!

You will also pass by:

  • Scoop’s stores from Sex and the City
  • Don’t miss the upscale and classy clothing stores such as Stella McCartney and Jeffrey’s
  • Los Dados: the Mexican restaurant where Carrie got stood up by a blind date!

Calling All Fashionistas

If you’re a fashionista like the lovely Carrie Bradshaw, look no further for details on the best department stores, boutiques, and designer shops in New York! Sometimes it seemed like the only thing Carrie did was shop, and we’ll show you some of her favorite sources. Remember Charlotte’s favorite shoe store, or the Manolos Carrie lost at her friend’s party? As we drive around Manhattan, we’ll point out the best boutiques and stores in NYC including Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, Patricia Field, Lulu Guinness, Jaime Mascaro, Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany & Co., Henri Bendel, Takashimaya, Fortunoff, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor, Diane Von Furstenberg and more!
