Nora Ephron’s Sleepless in Seattle is a modern romantic comedy about two lovers who meet in an unusual manner. The movie is inspired by the classic film, An Affair to Remember, and used both its theme song and clips from the film in critical scenes. Sam Baldwin just recently lost his wife to cancer so he and his son Jonah move out to Seattle, Washington for a fresh start. On the opposite coast, Annie Reed is a journalist in New York City stuck in an engagement where she knows the relationship is lacking. When Jonah calls into a radio show to find his father the right woman, Annie and Sam learn of each other’s existence, but will they fall in love?
While most of the film takes place in--and is filmed in--some of Washington’s most famous locales, the key moment when Sam and Annie finally find themselves together takes place on the observation level of the iconic Empire State Building, located at 350 Fifth Avenue. The climactic meeting at the top of the Empire State Building is yet another reference to the reunion between Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in An Affair to Remember that fails to happen because the Kerr character is struck by a car while en route.
Another memorable location from the film is The Rainbow Room, where Annie has a Valentine’s Day dinner with her fiancé, Walter (Bill Pullman). She looks out the window of the beautiful restaurant, located on the 65th Floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and sees a huge heart in lights on the Empire State Building. She then makes the decision to leave Walter and to meet Sam and Jonah on the observation deck.
Tom Hanks, who plays Sam, and Meg Ryan, who plays Annie, starred in their first movie together in 1990. The movie, Joe Versus the Volcano did not do well in box-offices, but since then, the duo have been seen in many other movies together including Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail. Their on-screen chemistry is undeniable, even though they only share about two minutes of screen time together in Sleepless in Seattle.
The film was nominated for two Oscars including best Screenplay and Best Music, Original Song and numerous other awards including categories at the Golden Globes, the MTV Movie Awards, and BAFTA. Meg Ryan won for Funniest Actress in a Motion Picture at the American Comedy Awards.
