Filming Locations from When Harry Met Sally | Katz Deli | New York TV and Movie Tour | New York Sightseeing, Bus Tour“Can men and women ever just be friends?”  This is the question raised and explored in the 1989 classic romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.  The film stars Meg Ryan as Sally and Billy Crystal as Harry.  The two first meet when driving together from college in Chicago to New York City.  They don’t make a great first impression on one another, and immediately go their separate ways when they finally reach New York.  Over the next few years, Harry and Sally periodically bump into each other in the city, and they begin to develop a very close friendship.  Of course, in the tradition of all great romantic comedies, after twelve years of many ups and downs, the friends finally realize they are perfect for one another.

The idea for When Harry Met Sally, written by Nora Ephron and directed by Rob Reiner, stemmed from Rob Reiner’s real-life experience with single life after a divorce.  Ephron interviewed Reiner and modeled the character of Harry after him.  The character of Sally was inspired by several of Ephron’s close girlfriends.  Billy Crystal also added some of his own ideas, which made the script even funnier.

Filming Locations from When Harry Met Sally | Katz Deli | New York TV and Movie Tour | New York Sightseeing, Bus TourThroughout the film, there are several scenes where elderly couples are sitting on a sofa speaking to the camera, documentary-style.  They couples tell the stories of how they first met and fell in love.  While the people in the film portraying these characters are professional actors, the stories they tell are all real-life stories gathered by Nora Ephron and Rob Reiner.

When Harry Met Sally is perhaps best known for the famous scene in Katz’s Delicatessen, where Sally demonstrates for Harry how easy it is for a woman to fake an orgasm without her partner knowing.  While Sally does this demonstration, Harry and all the other deli customers stare at her in disbelief.  Then comes one of the most famous lines in cinema history, which was actually delivered by Rob Reiner’s real-life mother, “I’ll have what she’s having.”  This line was listed as number 33 on the American Film Institute’s “100 Years… 100 Movie Quotes” list.  The location for this infamous scene, Katz’s Delicatessen, is seen on the New York TV and Movie Sites Tour.  There is now a plaque on the table at Katz’s where the scene was filmed that says, “Congratulations!  You’re sitting where Harry met Sally!”

Sally’s extremely picky eating habits were put into the movie when Rob Reiner observed the way Nora Ephron ate.  When Reiner questioned Ephron about the way she ordered her food, Ephron replied, “I just like it the way I like it.”  This line was put into the film.

Nora Ephron says she is happy with the way the film turned out, but was never truly happy with the title.  Other titles that were suggested before they settled on When Harry Met Sally include “Just Friends,” “Boy Meets Girl,” “It Had To Be You,” “Blue Moon,” and “How They Met.”

Nora Ephron received an Oscar nomination and Writers’ Guild of America nomination for her screenplay.  She also won a British Academy Film Award for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated for Best Film.  When Harry Met Sally was also nominated for five Golden Globes, including Best Picture: Musical or Comedy, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay.

Aside from Katz’s Delicatessen, the film also showcases many other New York City landmarks and locations of interest.  Scenes were shot inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in Central Park, at Washington Square Park, and inside the Puck Building in SoHo.
